Enhancing your thinking and word skills Read as much as you can. Reading is great basic brain exercise. You can read newspapers, magazines or books but just keep in mind that the more challenging the text is, the more of a workout your brain will get. Like any exercise, start small and work your way up. Increase your vocabulary. Learn new words from a word-a-day calendar or dictionary. This exercises the language portion of your brain. Write something. Writing requires loads of thinking! You can write made-up stories, or write down the things that have happened to you. Learn a new language. Learning a language is like a hack for your brain, opening up all sorts of pathways. This exercises the part of your brain that stores language information, even making you better at speaking your own language. Post-problem solve. Assertiveness Training for Children

Image
E ducators want children to be able to stand up for themselves and learn to interact well with their peers. Teaching them to be assertive and self-confident, as opposed to being aggressive or submission, contributes to their social and emotional development. Children who are aggressive blame, name call, threaten or fight with their peers. They are combative because they often lack social skills. These children need to learn better ways to interact with others or they will continually have difficulty developing positive relationships(see Educator’s Guide to Bullying). If children are submissive, they may become targets for bullies. These children need to be taught that it is okay to say “no” if a child or adult attempts to harm them with words or deeds. They need to be able to identify their feelings, learn how to express themselves, and believe that they have rights. The more children trust and value themselves , the more likely they will be able to avoid bullying. How can edu

Multiple Intelligences Students

By Leah Davies, M.Ed. In 1983, Howard Gardner, a noted Harvard psychologist and educator, wrote Frames of Mind. In it he claimed that human intelligence was more than a score gleaned from administrating an intelligence (IQ) test. He said that IQ tests cover verbal, logical, and some spatial intelligence, but lack acknowledgment of other forms of intelligence. After much research, he theorized that there are multiple intelligences that dictate how children and adults process and understand information. Dr. Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences (MI) validates what teachers have observed. Children think and learn in different ways. His work provides educators with a framework for reflecting on alternative methods of teaching and assessing student learning. He proposes that schools adopt the MI approach as an effective way to help every student master material. Using his approach, teachers identify and support each child’s capabilities. Most teachers and administrators in the U
